Allergy Symptoms in Kids: What You Need to Know

by | Mar 31, 2023

Allergy symptoms in kids may be hard to pinpoint. However, KidsStreet Urgent Care is here to educate you on common symptoms kids may suffer from when exposed to allergens.

Allergies In Kids

Many children suffer from allergies from a young age. Many allergens can cause allergic reactions, which can be difficult to understand without a diagnosis from a medical provider. Simply put, allergies are essentially the immune system reacting to something as if it will harm the body. This causes typical allergy symptoms like sneezing, coughing, and runny nose.

Common Kid Allergy Symptoms

Allergy symptoms may vary depending on the allergen your child has been exposed to.

Airborne Allergy Symptoms

Your child may be allergic to allergens in the air. Typical symptoms of these allergens consist of the following:

  • Congestion
  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose or sniffling
  • Hay fever

Dietary Allergy Symptoms

Food allergies are incredibly common and, in some cases, can be life-threatening. Dietary allergy symptoms include:

  • Stomach aches
  • Abdominal pain
  • Cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Swelling of the tongue or lips
  • Anaphylaxis

Insect Sting Allergy Symptoms

Stings from insects such as bees, wasps, ants, or yellowjackets can induce serious allergic reactions. Symptoms of these allergens include:

  • Itching around the area
  • Intense swelling
  • Swelling of the tongue or lips
  • Anaphylaxis

Chemical Allergy Symptoms

Some people may be allergic to certain chemicals, such as those in laundry detergents, cosmetics, or soaps. These allergic reactions are called contact dermatitis. Your child may have a chemical allergy if they have these symptoms:

  • Itchy skin
  • Rashes
  • Hives
  • Burning skin
  • Blisters
  • Dry skin

Medicine Allergy Symptoms

Certain medicines can cause allergic reactions. These are especially important to know early on for young children, as they may need particular medications to accommodate their allergies. Symptoms of a medicine allergy consist of:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Itchy skin
  • Swelling of the tongue or lips
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
