Bug Bites and Animal Bites in Kids: When to Seek Care

by | Aug 21, 2026

Key Points

  • Learn when bug bites may need medical attention.

  • Understand when animal bites should be evaluated.

  • Know signs of infection or allergic reaction.

  • Find out when emergency care is needed.

Bites are a common part of childhood. Younger kids may get bitten at daycare, while older kids may come home with mosquito bites after playing outside or a nip from an excited family pet.

Most bug bites in kids are short-lived annoyances, but animal bites deserve closer attention, especially if they break the skin.

But bites aren’t always minor, and it can be tricky to know when one needs more than a cold compress and a kiss on the cheek.

If you are ever unsure whether a bite warrants a visit, then this post is for you. Here’s what you need to know about pediatric urgent care for bites (and when urgent care may not be enough).

When a Bug Bite May Need Care

Most insect bites cause mild, temporary irritation. They may cause a mark or a bump, and could very well itch like crazy. Being annoyed is usually the worst outcome.

However, it’s worth having a bite evaluated if you notice:

  • Swelling that continues to worsen rather than improve
  • Increasing pain at the bite site
  • Warmth or spreading redness around the bite
  • Drainage or oozing from the bite
  • Fever developing after the bite
  • Severe itching that is difficult to manage
  • Any concern that your child may be having an allergic reaction

Bug bites can look different from child to child, and it is always reasonable to have one checked if something doesn’t seem right.

When an Animal Bite May Need Care

Animal bites deserve a bit more caution than most bug bites, especially if they come from a wild animal.

Consider bringing your child in if the bite breaks the skin, came from an animal you do not know, or is followed by swelling, pain, or signs of infection.

A bite that breaks the skin can introduce bacteria and may need medical evaluation. Bites from wild animals, stray animals, or animals with unknown vaccination history need extra caution because of infection and rabies concerns. Even if the bite came from a family pet, it is a good idea to have broken skin evaluated.

Our team can clean the wound, assess the risk of infection, and guide you on any additional steps that may be needed.

When to Seek Emergency Care for Bites

Some bite-related symptoms require emergency attention rather than urgent care.

Go to the nearest emergency room or call 9-1-1 right away if your child has:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat
  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction
  • A deep wound
  • Heavy bleeding that does not stop with pressure
  • Any other serious or rapidly worsening injury

Allergic reactions can escalate quickly, so it’s always better to act fast if you notice any of these signs.
